A proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week in which that date fall as Police Week, was a proclamation signed by President John F. Kennedy in 1962. In 1982, a Memorial Service event consisting of 120 survivors and law enforcement supporters took place in Senate Park.
