Heroes are
NEVER forgotten...
Everyone that has ever worn the badge, or had a family member who wears one, knows that the ultimate sacrifice might be asked of them. We know that in an instant, any assignment can turn into danger, then death, then unending sorrow. January 30, 2007 marked a sobering anniversary for the Clayton Police Department. It was 25 years ago when Officer Ray Gilmore was shot and killed in the line of duty. Officer Gilmore was sitting in his patrol car completing a report when a man approached his vehicle and shot him in the face, killing him. Ray is spoken of fondly and his loss was deeply felt by all who knew him. We must honor and remember our fallen heroes who serve others at all costs.
Members of the
Clayton Police Department and the Johnston County Fraternal
Order of Police gathered at Knollwood Cemetery to reflect and
remember a hero. This photo is of retired Clayton Police
-Detective Sergeant Jerry Smith playing the bagpipes as a
tribute to Ray. Jerry worked with Officer Gilmore in Clayton in
1982 when he was killed.
